Best of 76'? |
July 18, 1976 Orpheum Theater
Last night of a great stand at the Orpheum. This along with 6-11, 6-29, 9-28, 12-31 are the best shows of the year...set list is not only chock loaded for the period (minus a Help Slip Franklins perhaps) the playing is inspired. The second set is one big jam, featuring an outstanding Let It Grow drums Let It Grow segueway sequence and great readings of Wharf Rat and Stella Blue, throw in a St. Stephen...who's complaining?

Re: Best of 76'? |
I'm hardly a '76 expert, but in my notes I give Set 2 of 7/17 5 stars (out of 5). 7/18 only gets 4 stars, but there are plenty of highlights and Let It Grow gets a "!".

Edit: 5 stars are very rare - only the very best.

All of those you mention are fantastic. LOVE The Orpheum run and the soundcheck video. They all look like they are doing great.
Most underrated and fav of mine - 10/1/76
I think its one of the best of the year. Check the Help>Slip>monsterFrank and judge for yourself..

Re: Best of 76'? |
I’ll cast a vote from attendance, the Auditorium Theatre run in June of 1976 was thoroughly enjoyable. We attended both the June 27th and 28th performances, Tuesday the 29th was broadcast on WXRT so it made good sense to stay home and tape from the radio broadcast, upbeat show even though Garcia sounded somewhat partied out, well understood after four consecutive performances and the late evening - early morning gatherings on the road.
http://archive.org/details/gd1976-06-27.sbd.digitalrbb.miller.112295.flac16Highlights were standing on stage left just behind and in-between the PA stacks during “Looks Like Rain” on the 27th and viewing the performers perspective of the audience, a solid reading of this classic song from both Weir and Donna. I was young, impressionable and relatively early-on into my “rock n roll” fantasy era. The post Eyes jam on the 28th that exploded into “Happiness” got the audience up on their feet ...
http://archive.org/details/gd1976-06-28.sbd.digitalrbb.miller.112296.flac161976 had its share of rough moments and sloppy notes, the vocal harmonies greatly improved and it was good to see the band back enjoying themselves in strong form after the crash and burn of the - fall of the wall - in late 1974. I also enjoy listening to the rehearsals and development of new material from the studio outtakes at Weirs house in early 1975/1976 stored here at the archive.
The Summer of 1976 was a great time to be youthful, alive and into Rock n Roll.

Re: Best of 76'? |
I always thought this was the best show of 76 and if you want to show anyone how great 76 is this would be the show I would put on, but for me 76 is a year with huge moments of inspired play which again in my opinion outweigh the near perfection of this show. Sometimes it's just a set or a couple songs put together most amazingly but maybe I'll admit that's what I've been looking for lately. Nice pick!

7-18-76
The sound quality is amazing and then the show. Good Lord. I love that 2nd set sandwich, though I pass on the first two songs.

Re: Best of 76'? |
Love 76 ! That 7/18 show might be the best of the year, or at least in the top handful . I have always liked the 6/14 show , with that really spacey "Slipknot" ( almost 18 minuets worth ) , and "The Wheel","High Time", "Crazy Fingers", and "Cosmic Charlie" all lend to a super mellow vibe , which only a 76 show could have .

Re: Best of 76'? |
6/21-6/24 at the Tower Theatre didn't suck.
The lines to pee during Drums and Space did though....
